Keith Gilbert

POTC Coordinator Gympie

Keith is the newest member of the BFVG team – Based in Imbil (Gubbi Gubbi land), Keith is the Pick of the Crop Regional Coordinator for the Gympie and Fraser Coast Regions.

Keith has had two careers. Pre-2000, having studied Arts at Melbourne University, he worked in community development, peer education, social marketing and health promotion. He worked for various local, statewide and national peak organisations – in roles funded under successive National HIV/AIDS strategies, and others that saw him develop resources for high school teachers and other educators.

In the current millennium his career came to a fork in the road. He completed Certificate 4 in Horticulture at Wide Bay TAFE, focussing on organic fruit and vegetable growing. He has since worked as a sole-trader providing garden design and maintenance services across Gympie, Sunshine Coast and Mary Valley. This included a few years at the award winning Wasabi restaurant garden, which specialised in Japanese edible leaf and flower garnishes.

These two distinct career paths merged in 2008, when Keith started working for Kin Kin State School to help set up and maintain its signature Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, which he did until 2020. Keith is passionate about how food brings people together – whether through growing, cooking or sharing meals – and loves seeing young people have opportunities to learn the value of quality, fresh food.
